Teaching Flipped gives university faculty an introduction to the ins and outs of teaching with a flipped, hybrid, or online MOOC-type classroom. We will cover the basics of flipped/hybrid/MOOC classes, what is known and not known in the literature, and where these learning methods are heading, how to develop the online (video) content as well as the in class active learning activities, ways to think about and organize your course, and how to assess both the students and your teaching. This class is taught Flipped / MOOC-style by veteran flippers and MOOC-ers to give you experience with the tools and learning methods that can help your students succeed in this type of learning environment. Plan to watch/read about an hour of material each week and then try out and share what you have found. By the end of the course you should have a good idea of how to flip your own course, and have the tools to do this well.
Cynthia Furse, Ph.D.
Associate Vice President for Research
Dr. Cynthia Furse (PhD ’94) is the Associate Vice President for Research at the University of Utah and a Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering. Dr. Furse teaches / has taught electromagnetics, wireless communication, computational electromagnetics, microwave engineering, freshman electrical engineering and antenna design. She began flipping her classes in 2007, and has seen a substantial increase in student satisfaction and academic success as a result. She is now regularly engaged helping other faculty flip their classes, and has helped create an NSF-sponsored online faculty training program: (Teach-Flip.utah.edu) Dr. Furse is also actively engaged in research in implantable antennas and fault location for live electrical systems, and is a founder of LiveWire Innovation, a small company commercializing electrical fault location systems.
Donna Ziegenfuss, Ed.D.
Associate Librarian and Assistant Head in Scholarship & Education Services
Dr. Donna Ziegenfuss is Associate Librarian and Assistant Head in Scholarship & Education Services in the Marriott Library at the University of Utah. She has also been working in the area of faculty development and leadership for 15 years and has also taught in traditional, hybrid, online, formats in higher education for the past 10 years years. A course she teaches on qualitative research was recently redesigned as a flip. Dr. Ziegenfuss has also taught a MOOC on designing online courses. Her research, publications and presentations focus on the topics of assessment, online teaching and learning, faculty development, course design and curriculum in higher education, technology based instruction, and “grassroots” academic leadership.
Alyson Froehlich, Ph.D.

Dr. Alyson Froehlich is a teacher and learner interested, basically, in how people learn about and perceive the world around them. She received her PhD in Cognitive Neuroscience at the University of Utah, and she is now an Assistant Professor in the department of Psychology and a Higher Education Instructional Consultant for the Center for Teaching and Learning Excellence, both at the University of Utah. In her free time she enjoys hiking, camping, traveling, and basically being outside with her dogs and family.
