Songwriting: Creative Lyric Writing Approaches is a free course created by The Academy of Music & Sound. This course is suitable for beginners through to experienced songwriters; anyone who wishes to invigorate or reinvigorate their lyrical output. This course aims to equip you with a number of writing techniques and creative tools that will get you inspired and committed to your writing aspirations.
The syllabus for this course is set out over four weeks, with each week focusing on different areas of lyric writing. Each week provides helpful, practical, creative conversations, interviews and activities in order to help you grow as a songwriter and communicator. Each week also contains a 'Guided Audio' podcast to assist you with automatic writing. Here is a breakdown of the topics covered within the next four weeks:
Week 1 - 'Show, Don't Tell' - Journalling & Sensory Writing
Week 2 - 'Collecting Inspiration' - Art as Theft & Mining
Week 3 - 'Storytelling' - Narrative & Metaphor Creation
Week 4 - 'Keeping it Real' - Prosody & Finishing a Song
Rather than focusing on assessments and teaching how songs should be written, this course intends to open up your creativity and get you writing with a stronger sense of openness, commitment and discipline.
At the end of this course, you’ll be able to:
- Complete a dedicated songwriting journal, in particular to create daily automatic writing entries.
- Collect new sources of inspiration including new media, reading materials, different environments, conversations and activities.
- Create a storyline involving an archetypal character, and to translate this narrative writing experience in to a song writing format.
- Recognise and overcome the personal barriers experienced when writing lyrics to produce a first draft of a complete song.
Target Audience: Lifelong learners who wish to invigorate or reinvigorate their lyrical output.
